The shrubs and small tree that were already planted around the house we bought seem to be planted deeper than I would have thought. For instance, I don't see the bulge in the trunk of our Japanese maple, and the tree is in a sort of "basin" that was filled with rock gravel. Is this something to do with winters here? Or was it just a mistake?

we have newish trees planted by the developer that are bulging and drying out in the trunk but the leaves are green and growth is observed- they are on irrigation... is there anything else we can do to support the trees getting properly established?
