For Academy members, there are multiple federal policy action alerts that address food and nutrition insecurity directly and indirectly (e.g., Medically Tailored Meals in Medicare), so please check these out to take action: https://www.eatrightpro.org/advocacy/take-action/action-center. Non-members can also take action through our portal on a few of these as well.

When The Food Depot purchases pinto beans, we buy them unpackaged, in increments of 40,000 pounds. Volunteers do the work of repackaging and labeling them into family-sized bags. We can access those beans for 20-40 cents a pound, whereas an individual person will pay $1.25 or more per pound.

Not a question, just an FYI for ABQ-based folks:In the city of Albuquerque, the Sept of Senior Affairs NEVER stopped feeding older adults through the pandemic. They pivoted to almost doubling home delivered meals service and established grab and go for congregate meals participants. Want to let everyone in this audience now that all congregate meal sites in ABQ have reopened and provide free meals for all aged 60 and up, regardless of income, in alignment with DGAs, M-F. A recent evaluation indicated that 70% of congregate meal participants felt that the program increased their health and well-being in the last 6 months. More info here: https://www.cabq.gov/seniors/senior-services/senior-meals

The city also provides free transportation from home to senior centers for all those 60+ residing within a 5-mile radius (6 mile radius for east mountain sites), in addition to transportation to grocery store, medical appointments, grocery store, etc. https://www.cabq.gov/seniors/senior-services/senior-transportationIn addition, ABQ Meals on Wheels can do medically tailored meals for all ages, not just 60+, and they have a free program for income-eligible, then a sliding scale beyond that.
